The flower is wilting.

James 1:9-11 (NIV) “Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. 10 But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower. 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.

Is that a beautiful red rose in your hand? The shiny red petals along with that sweet-smelling aroma makes you want to stop and enjoy the moment.

A red rose is shimmery and wonderful when you first receive it, but unfortunately, it won’t last. Two days later, that rose will begin to wilt and not be as pretty as when you first giddily held it in your hands.

And, in one week…. sad to say, it will be time to toss it out.

Whatever possessions you have in your hands right now will eventually pass. The beauty and significance of it are just for this “now” moment.

Maybe it’s days, weeks, or even a year or two that it still has that shimmering effect. Eventually though, that brand-spanking new car will sport some unwanted scratches and dents, and that spotless interior will be littered with crumbs, spilled drinks, and dirt and sand ground under the mat.

Life is truly not about what’s in your hands at this moment, although that’s what we’re conditioned to believe. In every TV and radio commercial we are reminded of what we don’t have and what we really need to make us happy.

In the end though, those thing are filled with false promises and leave us empty, wanting even more.

So, instead of only going after momentary happiness, why not go after something that lasts… that doesn’t fade away or get old and tossed into the corner or stuffed into a “Good Will” bin?

Matthew 6:33 (NIV)  “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Go for the real gold! Discover what matters most and lasts beyond this moment. Discover God!
